A USA Today article just came out describing that a recent study shows women are still not choosing CS as a career path.
What are we doing to combat this trend?
- We have a "Women in Computer Science" student club for our undergraduate and graduate female students.
- We have a grant from Google Tides Foundation that funds outreach to local middle schools targeting underrepresented groups, which includes females.
- The Google Tides grant also funds teacher professional development of middle school teachers to help them better help their own students.
- We have received several NSF grants targeting high school teachers.
We are hopeful that a pipeline full of talented and confident girls is being developed. But it takes time for these long-term programs to bear fruit. We will keep trying here at AppState!
